Reasons to Buy Car Insurance
- Every Canadian province requires drivers to carry a minimal amount of coverage. Penalties for driving without insurance are severe. For this reason we recommend that you keep your proof of insurance with you whenever you drive. It will just make your life easier.
- A car insurance policy can protect you from financial loss if your car is stolen or vandalized (but only if you opt-in to include comprehensive coverage as part of your policy).
- If you have an accident, your insurance can help shield you from damage, liability, and injury claims, as well as provide funds for the repair of your own vehicle (if you opt-in to include collision coverage as part of your policy).
How a Policy Works
A car insurance policy is a written agreement between yourself and an insurance company. You pay premiums to keep the policy active and the insurance company compensates you for losses as defined in the policy.
A typical policy will include liability, property and medical coverage. This means that you will have insurance to cover injuries or property damage you cause to others in a collision, as well as coverage for treating injuries and paying for rehabilitation services if someone is hurt. Property coverage (more commonly called Comprehensive coverage) helps you if your car is stolen, and also pays for repairs if your car is damaged in a way that does not involve an accident (vandalism for example).
Sometimes insurance will not include all the kinds of coverage described above. You must of course carry the minimum amount of coverage required by your province or territory, but after that, policy modifications are up to you. It's possible to save money by maintaining only bare-bones coverage, but you might prefer to add options to give you additional peace of mind. Our site can help you to identify the various options and determine their prices at a number of different insurers.
What Are the Options?
There are many options available to car owners however the most popular are comprehensive coverage and collision coverage. Neither collision nor comprehensive are required by law, but it's a good idea to have both especially for people who drive newer cars. If you have the coverage, comprehensive covers your car for damage that is caused by something other than an accident. Comprehensive coverage is often paired with Collision coverage. Collision coverage pays for damage to your car in the event of an accident. Both collision and comprehensive have deductibles; this means there is an amount (which you often can pick) that you must pay as part of the claim.
Most firms who finance or lease cars require the vehicles be covered with both Comprehensive and Collision coverage. If you pay cash for your car, however, it will be up to you to decide if you want the additional car insurance.
