I don't have benefits, and am thinking about getting health insurance. Does it cover prescriptions?

It depends on the type of health insurance policy you are buying. Some include prescriptions and some don't so you'll want to be sure you check what's covered.

Some health plans do cover prescriptions as far as I know.

Found some additional information about supplementary health insurance that you might find handy. It's a brochure that's available from the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association Inc. on their website. The brochure (in .pdf format) is titled: A guide to supplementary health insurance Hopefully this booklet helps answer any other questions you might have.
