I had a quick question, if I have only received a G1 and bought a new car can I still get auto insurance?

Yes, you can still purchase insurance as a G1 driver if you own a vehicle. However, someone else must be listed as the primary driver of the vehicle on the insurance policy until you get your G2 licence and are able to drive on your own.

If you don't own your own vehicle, and are using your parent¿s car as a G1 driver, then you would be covered under their insurance. Adding you as a G1 driver shouldn't impact how much your parents pay for coverage. Most insurance companies do not "rate" (charge), for drivers who only have their G1 Ontario licence. Even so, based on your parent¿s original agreement with their insurer, they still have a responsibility to notify them there is a G1 licensed driver now in the household.

Why? Because this falls under the disclosure required when there is a 'material change' in risk, which a new driver represents. Once you get to the next level licence, you're parents will have to add you to their insurance policy by listing you specifically as a driver.
