How does my insurance company determine if I'm at-fault or not?

I live in Ontario, and was in an accident last month. How does my insurance company determine if I am at-fault or not?

A common misconception is that the police will determine who is at fault in the accident. While they may charge drivers at the scene with various driving offences, this rarely has an effect on the determination of fault for insurance purposes. Your insurance company will determine who was at fault in an accident using the Fault Determination Rules, which you can view online at:

While this question is specific to Ontario, I found some information about how fault is determined in British Columbia, in case someone from out there reads this post:
