How will driving while using a cell phone affect my insurance if I get a ticket?

Now that I can't use my cell phone while driving, what happens to my insurance if I get a ticket?

If you get a ticket for driving while using a hand-held device (note it is not just cell phones) the ticket you will likely get will be considered a "minor" ticket. Essentially the same as if you were caught driving without your seatbelt. Depending on your insurer, and how many tickets you already have, your rates may go up. If it is your first ticket, it may not.

Keep in mind though, that if the police feel that you were driving carelessly or dangerously as a result of using a hand-held device, they can also charge you with careless driving or even dangerous driving (a criminal offence). One of these tickets and the effects on your insurance will likely the least of your worries. If convicted, according to the MTO site, you will automatically receive six demerit points, fines up to $1,000 and/or a jail term of six months. In some cases, your licence may be suspended for up to two years.
