| Is there a grace period with insurance companies between moves? | |
| If I am moving to Hamilton, am I still insured before I tell my insurance company that I'm moving? Is there a grace period? Does this apply to home and car insurance? Posted by Guest on 2009/12/09 17:44:26 If you are moving you need to inform your insurance company beforehand in order to insure the proper coverage. There is no grace period or extension of coverage to cover your belongings once they are permanently removed from your insured property. If you were to have a fire in a new home 2 weeks after you've moved into it, and you haven't informed your insurance company of the move, you are technically not covered.
For auto insurance the same holds true however the Ontario Ministry of Transportation allows 14 days to switch your vehicle registration from your old address to your new one without it being a violation. Insurance companies generally will still cover you if you are within this time frame although it is always prudent to inform them of the move beforehand or as soon as it happens.
