What is the Accredited Superior Tanker Shuttle Service, and how can it lower my insurance?

Question

I've heard something about the Accredited Superior Tanker Shuttle Service. Does it in any way impact my insurance?

An Accredited Superior Tanker Shuttle Service can be found in rural or municipal areas that are far from fire departments. These facilities pass a test that proves they can quickly and effectively:

  • Pump a minimum of 900L/min (200 Gal/min) within five minutes of the first Pumper arriving at a fire scene, and,

  • Provide that continuous water flow uninterrupted for two hours.

The test must be within 8 km of the fire station and must be a least 5 km from the water source where the Tankers are reloaded. This test is important to determining part of the Fire Underwriters Survey Rating for a municipality and provides hydrant protected insurance ratings for areas not equipped with hydrants.

Many insurance companies recognize the Superior Tanker Shuttle Service Rating. Rural residents with homes within 8 km of a fire station, by road, and rural businesses within 5 km of a fire station may receive a reduction in insurance premiums.

I also found an interesting article on the history of the Fire Underwriters Survey on the same website: http://www.fireunderwriters.ca/fushistory_e.asp

It's probably not something you think about everyday, but fire fighting in Canada has certainly come a long way over the years!
