Insurance after DUI in Quebec

Can I borrow my wife's car after DUI conviction, and be covered by her insurance? If I do that for several years and then apply for my own policy, would the DUI no longer affect the rates? How many years would it take?

Hi,

DUI convictions stay on your motor vehicle record for 3 years and will affect your insurance for the same amount of time. Borrowing your wife's car is a separate issue. Is her insurance company aware that you have a license? Are you listed as a driver on her policy? If so then you are covered to drive her vehicle. If not then you may not be covered, especially if her insurance company normally wouldn't insure you with a DUI on your record. The best thing to do is check with her insurance company to ensure you will be covered to drive. This will enable you to maintain a claims free history while you wait for the DUI to drop from your record.
