Different policies in a house with a finished basement apt

Question

Hi All,

Had some general and specific questions about Insurance in Ontario.

Removing Someone From Policy

I removed myself from my Parent's and had to provide proof that I had insurance on another policy. Is this common procedure that must always be followed? Can someone not be simply removed?

Changing Policies

If an individual wants to change policies or leave an existing policy and join a different one, will the new Insurance company be able to see they were insured and if so will they see who they were insured with

Hi, thanks for your question.

Removing Someone From Policy
This is a somewhat common procedure, especially for drivers under 25 or who have had accidents/tickets. The Parent's insurer wants to make sure that you are insured elsewhere and being charged a price for your driving record. This frees up the parent to get the lower price without you as a driver. Quite often parents will fib about a child leaving the home or being insured elsewhere just to avoid paying higher premiums. This is why insurers put a check on the process.

Changing Policies
Yes the new company will be able to pull a report called an Autoplus report which will show who a person was formerly insured with.

Thanks so much for the reply.

So in a situation where the under 25 male is leaving the policy from the basement and into his parents...and when his parent's insurers see that he had insurance at the same address but "basement" will they attempt to bring those on a different policy in the basement on to the policy of the parents?

Sorry I know its confusing. Thanks.

If I'm reading you correctly then yes, the parents' insurer may try to bring the other drivers in the basement onto the parents' policy. They will want to know the information for all licensed drivers in the household. If the basement has a separate entrance and is not connected in any way to the main house then there is no need for this. The question the insurer will ask is 'who has access to the keys' as opposed to 'who will commonly drive the vehicle?"
