About how many kilometres do you drive each year?

The more you use your motorcycle, the higher the risk that you'll be involved in an accident. Some insurance companies will even offer lower premiums to people who don't drive as often.

To answer this question, simply select a numerical response that best describes your usage.

About how many kilometres is it driven to work/school each day? (one way)

Driving to work or school includes driving all the way to your office or school as well as driving to a subway, bus or train station. Generally, people who don't use their vehicle to get to work or school, will have a lower premium than those who do.

To answer this question, simply select a numerical response that best describes your usage.

  • payment of medical, rehabilitation and attendant care expenses;
  • payment of funeral expenses and payments to survivors of a person who is killed.

Annual premium

The insurance premium shown is the total estimate for all vehicles and drivers. These estimates are based on the information you've entered into our Quotemaker and do not include provincial tax or service charges if they apply.

All prices shown are 12-month (yearly) policies. This makes it easier for you to compare, however some insurance companies may only offer 6-month policies.

Claims rating

Claims satisfaction ratings are available for companies listed on Kanetix that provide quotes to Ontario residents only. This information is published by the Financial Services Commission of Ontario (FSCO). Each year, FSCO releases a claims satisfaction survey that compares car insurance companies on policy price and customer service satisfaction.

For more information on the survey, visit the FSCO's Web site, www.ontarioinsurance.com.

Collision coverage

Collision Coverage

Collision coverage pays to fix or replace your motorcycle if it is damaged in a collision.

By choosing a deductible here, you are choosing to include collision into your insurance coverage. The amount of your deductible affects the price of your insurance policy. The higher your deductible, the less the cost of your insurance premium.

A deductible is the portion of a claim that you would pay. For example, let's say your deductible is $500. If you made a claim for a collision and the damages were assessed at $2,000, you would have to pay $500 towards the repairs, and your insurance company would take care of the balance.

If the coverage type or deductible amount you are looking for is not offered online, please call us here at Kanetix to be transferred to speak to a company insurance representative. There may be other options available.

Coverage Options

For your convenience we have pre-selected the coverages most often chosen by our visitors for your motorcycle. You can modify these coverages below. Once you've made your changes for each company, you must select the 'Recalculate' button to update your rates.

By choosing a deductible for a particular coverage, you are choosing to include this coverage on your quote. The amount of your deductible affects the price of your insurance policy. The higher your deductible, the less the cost of your insurance premium.

A deductible is the portion of a claim that you would pay. For example, let's say your deductible is $500. If you made a claim and the cost was assessed at $2, 000, you would have to pay $500, and your insurance company would take care of the balance.

Specified perils coverage is not available for certain models of motorcycle unless they have an approved anti-theft device. If the coverage type or deductible amount you are looking for is not offered online, please call us here at Kanetix to be transferred to speak to a company insurance representative. Liability limit

Liability Coverage

Liability insurance provides coverage for you if someone else is injured or killed. It also provides coverage if their property is damaged as a result of a motorcycle accident.

Ontario has a "no-fault" car insurance system. This means that if you're injured or your vehicle is damaged, then you deal with your own insurance company, no matter who is at fault. You don't have to go after the at-fault driver for compensation.

If you are legally responsible for an accident, then you are also legally responsible for the damages. If you are uninsured, you will be charged with driving/riding without insurance, and you may be fined. You may also have your driver's licence suspended until you have made satisfactory arrangements to repay the amount owing.

My bike was made pre-1990?

Currently, we are unable to provide online quotes for motorcycles older than 1990. A local insurance representative may be able to help you. Visit www.insurancedirectory.ca to search for a licensed representative in your area.

Why can Kanetix not quote bikes built in 1989 or earlier? In order for us to provide accurate insurance quotes, Kanetix relies on the data provided by the VICC (Vehicle Information Centre of Canada). Unfortunately, older motorcycles are not represented within this data. As a result, to quote for an older motorcycle, an insurance company generally needs to rely on the price of the bike (or an appraisal of the bike). However, the Kanetix motorcycle Quotemaker is not currently designed to offer any value-based quotes like this on our Web site.

No. 19 - Limitation of amount payable (Restrictive endorsement)

Some insurance companies set a maximum they are willing to pay in the event of a claim. This maximum is either the actual cash value of your bike (or its damaged parts) or the limit specified in the policy endorsement. Whichever is less.

No. 40 - Fire and theft deductible (Restrictive endorsement)

By having this option on your policy, you agree to pay your full deductible if your motorcycle is completely written-off or not recovered due to fire or theft.

No. 44 - Family Protection

Family Protection Coverage provides coverage for you and your family from the actions of an at-fault, underinsured driver. If you are travelling in a province or a state where the mandatory liability coverage is low, Family Protection coverage ensures that you and your family are covered if you are injured in an accident up to your own policy's limits regardless of the other person's coverage levels.

Specified perils

Specified perils covers you for specific accidental damage caused only by fire, theft, lightning, windstorm, hail or rising water, earthquake, explosion, riot or civil disturbance, falling or forced landing of aircraft or parts of aircraft, or the stranding, sinking, burning, derailment or collision of any kind of transport in, or upon which the vehicle is being carried on land or water.

By choosing a deductible here, you are choosing to include specified perils into your insurance coverage. The amount of your deductible affects the price of your insurance policy. The higher your deductible, the less the cost of your insurance premium.

A deductible is the portion of a claim that you would pay. For example, let's say your deductible is $500. If you made a theft claim and the cost of your bike was assessed at $10, 000, you would have to pay $500, and your insurance company would take care of the balance.

Specified perils coverage is not available for certain models of motorcycle unless they have an approved anti-theft device. If the coverage type or deductible amount you are looking for is not offered online, please call us here at Kanetix to be transferred to speak to a company insurance representative. There may be other options available.

The coverage and deductible choices available through Kanetix allow for easy comparison between companies, however, other options may exist. For example, Comprehensive coverage includes the items listed in specified perils and in addition covers falling or flying objects, missiles and vandalism. Ask your agent or broker, at the time of purchase, for a complete list of coverage and deductible options.

What is the engine displacement (size) of your motorcycle in CCs?

Engine Displacement

The engine displacement, or size of your motorcycle, is an important factor in determining your insurance rate. The size of your motorcycle is often included in the name (e.g. Honda VF750C).

What is the model of your motorcycle?

Model of Motorcycle

Insurance companies use information like the model of your motorcycle to figure out your premium. They look at details of other claims submitted for that model: like repair costs, rate of injury, and the chances that your motorcycle will be stolen. Some companies consider the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price when they're putting together your premium.

What is the value of all modifications, customizations and accessories?

To calculate your rate, we need to know the value of any modifications, enhancements and accessories on your motorcycle like saddle bags, electronics and custom parts.

What type of theft protection device does your motorcycle have?

Theft Protection

Insurance companies may offer a discount if your bike has a theft protection device. The Harley-Davidson Factory, Security System, Sherlock Anti-Theft, Gorilla, Viper, Armed Guard, Auto Watch, Scorpio and Merlin theft protection devices are the most common in Canada and are also the most likely to qualify for an insurance discount.Check below for more information about each type of theft deterrent.

Audible
The audible alarm is usually combined with other security systems and will make a loud noise if triggered (e.g. a vehicle fitted with an impact or tilt sensor will also be equipped with an audible siren that will sound if there is contact with, or movement of the motorcycle). A second backup battery is required for a discount to apply.

Electronic immobilizer
Electronic immobilizers disable the starter or ignition systems. Typically a special key or small electronic device is needed to start the engine. Many anti-theft systems include audible sirens and pager devices as part of the complete protection package.

Impact/Motion
These devices sense vibrations or movement of your motorcycle. They may also monitor movement around your motorcycle's immediate perimeter. When armed, any contact with the bike (someone trying to lift or push it, will activate an audible alarm or paging device.)

Mechanical immobilizers
Mechanical anti-theft devices include disc, lever, cable or "U" locks. These devices are good visual deterrents and can prevent your bike from being moved.

Monitored Tracking
Monitored security systems are also known as 'vehicle recovery' systems. They are high-tech devices, usually tracked by Global Positioning satellite (GPS). The system is activated when the vehicle is reported stolen by the owner.

What was the retail price of your motorcycle when it was new, including taxes but excluding modifications, customizations and accessories?

Retail Value

To calculate your rate, some insurance companies need to know the manufacturers suggested retail price (MSRP cost) of your motorcycle. This cost does not include the cost of any modifications, customizations and accessories, it does however, include all taxes.

If you are not sure of the exact cost of your motorcycle then you can either contact a motorcycle dealer for help or you can enter an approximate cost, which can later be confirmed with a licensed representative. You should however note that this price may affect your quotes.

What year is your motorcycle?

Insurance companies need to know the year of your motorcycle, so they can consider things like repair costs, rate of injury, and the chances that your motorcycle will be stolen. Generally, newer motorcycles are more attractive to thieves, so you'll end up paying a higher premium than if you insured an older model of the same motorcycle.

What's the make of your motorcycle?

Make of Motorcycle

Insurance companies use information like the make of your motorcycle to figure out your premium. They look at details of other claims submitted for that make: like repair costs, rate of injury, and the chances that your motorcycle will be stolen. They also consider the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price when calculating your premium.

Who drives it the second most?

Insurance companies consider the number of different people that drive your motorcycle, and their insurance record. Generally, the more people that drive your motorcycle, the higher will be your insurance premium.

Who rides it most of the time?
