Spring into driving season: Fewer accidents occur in spring than any other season

Posted: March 17, 2011

Fewer car accidents occur during the spring months-March, April and May-than any other time of the year according to auto insurance quote comparison service Kanetix.ca.

Of all the car accidents disclosed while getting auto insurance quotes at Kanetix.ca in 2010, almost 22 per cent occurred in the spring. Compared to winter, and even summer, accidents appear to be less likely to happen as the warm weather approaches.

Of all the accidents:

  • 29.4% occurred in December, January or February
  • 21.8% happened in March, April or May
  • 25.4% took place in June, July or August
  • 23.3% happened in September, October or November

You're in the driver's seat all year long

No one wants to be involved in a car accident, no matter what the season. But do you know what to do if you are in an accident? The following are a few tips to help you be prepared, just in case:

  • Stay calm and keep your safety in mind at all times.

  • Report a car accident to the police if someone is injured or if the damage is over the provincial limit.

  • If the vehicles are driveable, and it is safe to do so, move them to the side of the road. If you are unable to move the vehicles set up warning signals or flares.

  • If possible, take photos of the accident scene.

  • Take note of the: time and date of the accident, location, driver names, contact details (phone and address), insurance information, make/model and licence plate numbers of all the vehicles involved, and the contact details for all vehicle occupants and witnesses.

  • Call your insurer as they can often walk you through all of the steps necessary.
As the warm weather approaches, roll down the windows, enjoy the warm breeze and continue to drive carefully.
