Ready? Set. Go! It's car buying season

Posted: March 29, 2011

As the warm weather approaches, so too does the car buying season in Canada. Usually beginning in March and ending sometime around when the kids go back to school, Canadians appear to buy vehicles, new cars and used cars, according to the temperature. After all, who wants to wander around a dealership lot browsing in minus 20°C weather?

It is no surprise then, that the Canadian auto insurance policy season closely mirrors the car buying season, according to auto insurance comparison service Kanetix.ca.

Of all the Canadian auto insurance quotes obtained at Kanetix.ca in 2010, 28 per cent were for policies that were to commence in the spring months (March, April or May) and 29.3 per cent in the summer (June, July or August).

  • 20% of policies were to start in the winter,
  • 28% in spring,
  • 29.3% in summer, and
  • 22.7% in the fall.

When does your next auto insurance policy expire?

Chances are your policy will expire during the six months beginning with March and ending in August. When your policy is up for renewal will you simply renew with your current insurer? Or will you shop around to make sure you're getting the best auto insurance price?

Auto insurance rates fluctuate from year-to-year and the insurer who at one time offered you the best car insurance rate, may not be the right fit for you on renewal. Compare auto insurance quotes when it's time, usually a month or two before your policy expires. It's the only way to make sure you are not overpaying for the auto insurance coverage you need.
