Canadians increase spending, travel in second quarter

Posted: August 26, 2011

When Canadians travelled earlier this year, they did a considerable amount of spending in the United States, according to a new study from Statistics Canada.

During 2011's second quarter, the study found Canadians spent nearly $5 billion in the U.S., an increase of 4 per cent when compared to the same three-month period in 2010.

Spending in countries other than the U.S also reached new highs, as Canadians parted with $3.2 billion elsewhere in the second quarter. During that same period, the number of international trips also increased more than 4 per cent. That's the highest rate of travel among Canadians since 1972, when that type of data was first recorded.

The agency also reported the changes in the mode of travel among Canadians. For instance, when planning a trip to the United States, overnight plane travel rose 5.5 per cent in the second quarter to 1.9 million, which is also the highest level recorded in the past 39 years.

While travel insurance can be useful for a variety of scenarios, it's particularly helpful for plane trips, as policies can recover individuals' losses should flights be cancelled.
