Canadian National Railway Company recently made a sizable donation to the Red Cross, as many homeowners in Quebec are still recovering after a significant flood event last year.
In May 2010, heavy rainfall caused the banks of the Richlieu River to overflow, precipitating a massive flood that affected thousands of homeowners and businesses in the area. Altogether, approximately 3,500 residents and business owners were forced to abandon their properties to escape the historic water levels.
Claude Mongeau, president and chief executive officer of CN, is hopeful the contribution will help expedite the recovery process for the area's residents.
"The devastating effects of this flood continue to be felt in numerous communities along the Richelieu River as people are still coping with the aftermath," said Mongeau. "CN and its employees are proud to support the Red Cross in helping people in need following this disaster."
Michel Leveille, General Manager for the Quebec chapter of the Red Cross, expressed her thanks on behalf of those affected saying it will make "their journey back to a normal life shorter."
Because flood coverage is typically not offered by Canadian home insurance policies, relief organizations and governmental bodies often provide disaster assistance.
