Termites are a serious problem for Ontario homeowners, but the Canadian Concrete Masonry Producers Association believes it can help solve the issue.
According to CCMPA, termites cause nearly $120 million in property damage annually. However, the organization says this home damage issue can be solved if building codes are updated to require masonry work on all structures.
"The reality is that termites are aggressive and difficult to prevent," said Paul Hargest, president of the CCMPA. "While masonry alone won't eliminate them, it can help act as a barrier by minimizing the home's wood-soil contact - a key point of entry for termites."
Citing Dennis Ring, an entomologist with Louisiana State University, the CCMPA says the Formosan subterranean termite is among the most destructive of home insect invaders, described by some as a "super termite."
The organization says industry research indicates Ontario homeowners are choosing homes made of brick and stone over wood more often, which serves as another reason why masonry work should be mandated.
Home insurance costs depend on a variety of factors, including what a home is primarily made up of. However, termite damage is generally not covered by home insurance.
