With summer now officially underway, Canada's minister of state of foreign affairs is warning Canadian travellers to be aware of the environmental hazards that occur between June and November - namely, hurricanes.
"Our government considers the safety and well-being of Canadians travelling or living abroad to be of paramount importance," said the Honourable Diane Ablonczy. "I advise Canadians to inform themselves about the risks of travelling to areas affected by hurricanes."
Ablonczy went on to say Canadian travellers vacationing in hurricane-prone areas - like the Caribbean, Mexico and southern U.S. - should know how to protect themselves and their families.
Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada says travellers can increase their safety by paying attention to the travel reports and warnings issued regularly by the Government of Canada and signing up for the Registration of Canadians Abroad program, which gives Canadian authorities the ability to contact travellers in the event of an emergency.
Travel insurance may be another precautionary measure to take. Among other things, it may cover travellers' ability to delay or cancel a flight without sustaining a financial loss.
