Presentations show students impact of impaired driving

Posted: May 19, 2011

In an effort to curb the type of reckless driving that leads to auto insurance claims and loss of life, MADD Canada will hold presentations at a number of schools through Ontario.

The organization's school assembly program features 25 presentations, each of which offers a fictionalized account of the harmful effects drinking and driving had on one student's life and family. The program also provides students with information meant to show them the legal and social impact of driving drunk or under the influence of drugs. According to MADD, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for young people between 15 and 25 years old, with alcohol playing a part in 45 percent of those incidents.

Those drivers also account for 33.4 percent of alcohol-related crash deaths despite representing just 13.2 percent of the Canadian population.

"The end of the school year is approaching and students are looking forward to the graduation and end-of-term parties," said Andrew Murie, CEO of MADD Canada. "It's a particularly important time of year to remind young people about the terrible dangers of impaired driving and the importance of always making safe driving decisions."

MADD data shows older teens - those nearing graduation age - are also more likely to be killed or injured in an automobile incident. That data plays a part in the higher premiums teens often pay for Ontario auto insurance.
