The risk of identity theft never stops. In fact, its prevalence often picks up when potential victims take a break from the daily grind and travel.
Because summer is the season for vacations, identity theft prevention company Protection Power is offering five tips to help make sure Canadians travel with their identities protected.
The company says Canadians should try and take as few identity documents as possible, as there's less opportunity for thieves to take advantage. Of the things that are needed, they should be photocopied and given to a trusted individual.
In addition, Protection Power says vacationers should put identifying documents in various places rather than altogether, which will help limit the damage should one piece of luggage be stolen.
Finally, once sightseers have arrived at their destination, the organization says they should make use of the safes that many hotels come equipped with. They should also use the hotel's web service, if available, to update friends about their whereabouts.
Sulvain Patry, senior vice-president of Protection Power, said these tips can help ensure Canadians have a safe and enjoyable vacation.
An additional safety measure may be travel insurance. Some all-inclusive travel insurance plans cover a portion of the expenses associated with replacing lost or stolen personal effects like a traveller's passport, driver's license, birth certificate or travel visa.
