When the Canadian Pacific Railway arrived to the city in 1882, North Bay started to become settled. The founder of Quebec City, Samuel de Champlain, was the first to explore the area and it was here, at Callander (a southeastern suburb of North Bay) that the CPR began it's western expansion.

North Bay is very much associated with the railroad. The CPR, CN and the Ontario Northland all run through here. In the early days, these three railways plus lumbering and mining, all helped North Bay to grow. In August of 1925, the North Bay was incorporated as a city.

The city had another boost to their economy during the depression but from an unlikely source - the Dionne Quintuplets who were born in the southern outskirts of the City in 1934. Today the city has a large and thriving university and college population, a good tourism base and a provincial government service centre. Education and government jobs are the city's biggest employers.

North Bay has a large waterfront redevelopment project underway which is scheduled to be completed by 2011. The project includes a mini-train ride, carousels, botanical gardens, and a children's area. The city hopes that the work will bring many more tourists to the area.
