The city got its name for the Latin name for Guernsey which is located in the Channel Islands off the coast of France. Another story says that the name is actually of Celtic origins. The area was first called The Rapids and then Port Sarnia before taking on its current moniker.

These two railways were linked to the U.S. in 1889 via a tunnel under the St. Clair River at Sarnia in 1889. This was the first rail tunnel ever to pass under a river. The area was further helped after 1938 when the Bluewater Bridge was constructed over the river for vehicular traffic between Canada and U.S.

The city is not just a major port but also a major petrochemical centre. The Petroleum industry has been in the Sarnia area since the 1800s when the first oil discovery in North America occurred in nearby Petrolia.

Today, pipelines bring oil from Alberta to Sarnia for refining and for petrochemical productions which make the base of the city's economy. Also, large salt beds under the city are mined for chlorine and make up a big part of the local economy.

The city is characterized by industry which spread south down the river, and housing which spread east along Lake Huron. The shoreline on the lake has great freshwater beaches and marinas for recreational sailing. In fact, more than 3000 sailors each year come for the Mackinac race. The annual race is 400 kilometres long and stretches between Sarnia to the south, all the way to Mackinac Island, at the north end of Lake Huron.
