With more and more options available for travel insurance coverage these days, who can keep track of all the particulars? What do you pay for exactly? Who needs travel insurance coverage anyways? If you've started shopping around for vacation coverage and are trying to understand exactly what you pay for when purchasing travel insurance coverage, keep reading!

Types of travel insurance coverage and what's included:

Essentially there are 3 different types of travel coverage that are bundled many different ways to cover the travel insurance coverage needs of every individual. The three types are called emergency medical travel coverage, trip cancellation travel coverage and baggage protection travel coverage.

Emergency Medical travel coverage is the actual health coverage portion of travel insurance coverage. Different companies cover different amounts. Typical travel coverage amounts are $2 million and $5 million. What's the difference you ask? Well, that depends on you really. The more the vacation coverage the bigger cushion you have in case you have to make a claim.

Key items covered in most emergency medical travel coverage policies are trips to the hospital and care if you're admitted, prescription medication, emergency dental care, and proper return of remains if you were to pass away. Anything over and above these categories, such as pet return, child care during hospital admittance or meals and accommodation for travel companions are included in what are called "deluxe" or comprehensive plans that fewer companies offer in their travel insurance coverage policies. These travel coverage packages are almost always more expensive and fall in the $5 million overall vacation coverage range.

Trip cancellation travel coverage is just that - vacation coverage if your trip needs to be cancelled for specific reasons including flight cancellation by the airline or accidental death after landing at your destination. "Deluxe" or comprehensive options are also available for trip cancellation travel coverage, which for some companies includes partial coverage if you change your mind, loss of baggage coverage or in-flight accidents including but not limited to death. Trip cancellation is useful for travel packages that are non-refundable or during the holiday season when travel congestion cancels flights at a higher percentage.

But don't forget! Trip cancellation travel coverage can only be purchased within 48 hours of completely paying for your flight and/or travel package.

Baggage protection travel coverage protects your baggage in 2 ways. The first deals with loss of luggage. This type of travel insurance coverage will usually cover up to $1000 if your luggage does not arrive when you do. The second deals with damage to luggage while in transit. If your luggage is ripped or the contents of your luggage are damaged while in the possession of the company you're travelling with, up to $1000 of the contents of your baggage is usually what the travel coverage policy will cover. But make sure to read the policy as all travel insurance coverage companies are different with their travel coverage amounts.

Getting the Best Travel Insurance Coverage at the Lowest Price

Just like auto insurance, travel coverage comes with many options that you can choose to include in your package, or not. Not worried about getting your backpack stolen?
