Planning an African safari with the family? Or maybe you'd prefer something a little tamer, like a week on a sun-drenched coastal paradise -- babysitting included! Then again, perhaps you plan to set yourself adrift on a singles-only Mediterranean cruise.
Whatever your travel plans, your run-of-the-mill travel health insurance plan should cover you for unexpected illness, disease or injury. Things like emergency transportation, outpatient services, doctors' fees, hospital care and medication are standard fare in travel health insurance plans.
Limitations
Of course, there are some strings attached. For instance, many travel health insurance providers will limit the amount of time that you can stay in an emergency facility, providing you are stable enough to safely head home.
And speaking of limitations... many travel health insurance plans will not cover pre-existing medical conditions -- like a heart problem, diabetes, stroke or cancer that was diagnosed before your trip. Sometimes even the fact that you have a new prescription for a longtime medical condition may affect your coverage.
Some companies may not cover medical emergencies caused by AIDS, pregnancy, travel to certain dangerous countries, or injuries caused by high-risk adventure-type sports. And don't expect to be covered for non-medical emergencies like a routine checkup, elective surgery or follow-up care after recent medical treatment.
It all boils down to this. Check out the fine print before you sign any travel health insurance plan.
