Scenic Drives Worth the Flight
Is the open road calling you? These scenic routes are not only worth the drive but the flight to get there too.
Road trips are the quintessential family vacation, but they don’t always have to be within driving distance from where you live. Sometimes a road trip requires a flight first. These scenic drives are popular with travellers and are sure to inspire you when planning your next vacation.
Amalfi Coast, Italy
Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, the drive along the Amalfi Coast is known to be challenging owing to its winding and narrow roads. If you’re up to the road test however, the approximately 60 km route between Sorrento and Salerno is peppered with towns along the way that are worth a visit.
Atlanterhavsvegen (the Atlantic Road) is one of Norway’s 18 designated scenic drives. Located in the northwest of the country, the route runs from Kårvåg to Bud, for a total distance of 36 km. The coastal drive includes crossing seven bridges that connect the various islets to each other, taking the phrase of “island-hopping” to a whole new level.
Cabot Trail, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia
The Cabot Trail, located on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, is unquestionably beautiful with its coastal views and highland countryside, but this 300 km trail is also well-known for the hospitality of its area residents. A road trip along the Cabot Trail will feel like home in no time.
Chapman’s Peak Drive, South Africa
Just 9 km long, Chapman’s Peak Drive hugs the mountains on one side and the Atlantic on the other. With 114 curves, the route winds its way between Noordhoek and Hout Bay, both suburbs of Cape Town. Despite the relatively short drive however, there’s lots to do along the way as well as many places to stop to take in the view.
Great Ocean Road, Australia
Located about a two-hour drive from Melbourne, Australia’s Great Ocean Road spans about 400 km between the towns of Torquay and Nelson. Whether it’s surfing, beachside villages, clifftop views, rock formations, whale watching, or koala spotting that revs your engine, this road trip down under will lift your spirits.
Hana Highway, Maui, Hawaii
The road to Hana from Kahului on Maui runs along the northeastern coast of the Hawaiian island for about 83 km. With more than 600 sharp turns and 59 bridges (of which 46 are a single lane), the view along the Hana Highway includes lush jungle vegetation, cliffs, beaches and waterfalls.
Icefields Parkway, Alberta
The Icefields Parkway winds through Banff National Park and Jasper National Park. For 232 km you’ll have a first-row ticket to wildlife, glaciers, waterfalls and turquoise lakes. Although you can drive it in about 2.5 hours (going the speed limit of course to avoid a ticket which will help keep your auto insurance premiums in check), you’ll likely want to set aside a full day to make the trip. There are many places to pull off the road to take in the sights or go for a hike.
Pacific Coast Highway, California
If you’re California dreamin’ then the reality of the Pacific Coast Highway will awaken your senses. The route will take you from San Francisco to San Diego, about 950 km. Whether it’s wineries, surfing villages or star-studded Hollywood that piques your interest, this drive showcases some of the best that California has to offer.
