Brantford, Ontario Canada with a population of approximately 90,000 people is located on the Grand River in southwestern Ontario, Canada. The city is situated between London to the East, Hamilton to the west and Cambridge to the north. The largest Native reserve in Canada is adjacent to Brantford; The Six Nations 40.
Brantford is known as "Telephone City" because Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone while living at the Bell Homestead on the outskirts of the city. Bell made the first long distance call on August 10th, 1876 from Brantford to his assistant in Paris, Ontario. Other famous people from Brantford include actor Phil Hartman of The Simpsons and News Radio, and hockey superstar Wayne Gretzky.
In 1784, the crown gave a large land grant on the Grand River to Captain Joseph Brant and the six nations Indians of New York for loyalty to the crown. In 1847, European settlers began to settle at a ford (a ford is a place in a stream or river that is shallow and may be crossed by wading, on horseback, or in a wheeled vehicle) in the river and named the town Brantford.
For the first half of the 20th century Brantford was an important industrial centre. However, by the 1980's and 1990's Brantford's economy was in serious trouble with the bankruptcies of a number of its core companies including: White Farm Equipment, Massey Ferguson, Koering Waterous, Harding Carpets and others. This left the city with one of the worst economic pictures in Canada. Currently the town is enjoying more prosperity due to the completion of a section of the 403 Highway from Brantford to Ancaster which brought some business to the city.
