If your hot water tank was installed after 1996, the installation date should be on the side of the tank. If you are unsure, select the answer that corresponds to the year your home was built.

All risk building coverage

When you have All risk building coverage, your building is insured for almost everything, unless it's specifically excluded from your policy (e.g. intentional damage to your own property would not be covered). This is the most common type of coverage for your building because it offers the most protection, especially for any strange unforeseen events.

This is an estimate of how much your insurance premium will be - based on the information you've entered into our comparison service. It does not include provincial tax or service charges if they apply.

Choose a deductible

Deductible

A deductible is the set amount of money you have to pay when making a claim. For example, let's say your deductible on your property policy is $500. If you had a fire and the damages were assessed at $5,000, you would have to pay the $500 to your insurance company first, and they would take care of the balance of the repair costs. The amount of your deductible affects the price of your insurance policy. The higher your deductible, the less the cost of your insurance premium.

Choose your liability coverage

Liability

Liability insurance protects you from having to pay damages to people if you have been found responsible for unintentionally injuring them or their property. For example, if someone slipped on your kitchen floor and broke their leg, you would need liability insurance to protect you if they sued you and the courts ruled it was your fault.

Do you currently have a property insurance policy?

Some insurance companies need to know if this property owner or tenant currently has a property insurance policy in Canada. Please indicate whether this owner/tenant is currently covered under an existing property insurance policy.

Do you operate a home-based business from your property?

Home-Based Businesses

A basic home insurance policy may provide enough coverage for your home-based business. However, you may want to purchase additional coverage especially if your business:
  • has customers visiting your home regularly
  • uses specialized or costly equipment
  • has product inventories has signs at the location advertising a business
  • uses hazardous materials or processes
  • has employees working from your home
Some of this additional coverage may be available through a rider that is simply added to your home insurance policy. There are times however, when you might be better off purchasing a commercial policy.

Complete your quote and then go over these details with your insurance representative to ensure you've got the protection you need.

Enter the postal code for the residence you want to insure

Home insurance rates vary, depending on where you live. Areas that are prone to break-ins or are located far from emergency services like fire halls and police stations, usually have higher insurance rates. Why? Because there's a greater chance you will have to make a claim.

Features

To help you select the insurance company--or policy--right for you, we've compiled a list of some of the key features you might find helpful in making your decision.

Some of these features include:

  • payment options,
  • A.M. Best rating, and
  • discounts applied to your quote.

Insurance companies use the proximity of your property to a fire hall as one of the factors in calculating your rate. The closer you are to a fire hall, in theory, the less damage your property and belongings will sustain if a fire should break out.

Many insurers are unwilling to cover cottages or seasonal homes on a standalone basis, but will provide coverage as an extension of your primary home insurance package.

I don't know the replacement value of my home/personal property?

For the tenant or condominium owner
The replacement value of your property includes the value of all personal property you normally keep in your unit and on your lot. This also includes any items you are leasing or renting (e.g. a leased lawn mower in your garage, or a leased television set).

For homeowners
The replacement value of your home is the price to rebuild your house (with materials of like kind and quality) after a serious loss, like a fire. It is NOT the amount you would get if you sold your house (i.e. the market value or MPAC) and does not include the value of the land where your house is located.

The best way to accurately compare home insurance quotes is to use the replacement value on your current home policy.

If your current home insurance policy is unavailable, the average replacement value for most urban Canadian centres is about $175 per square foot. Then, when you speak to the agent or or broker, they will make sure this value reflects your home's true replacement value using the tools and statistics they have available.

  • Notarizing documents
  • Lost Wages
  • Other expenses such as long distance phone calls, postage, courier costs, etc.

Be sure to speak to a representative to verify exact coverage and policy limits.

In the past 5 years, have you had a home insurance policy cancelled by an insurance company OR has an insurer ever refused to insure this residence?

Insurance Cancellations or Refusals

You should answer 'Yes' to this question if, in the last 5 years, an insurance company has cancelled your home insurance policy, or has refused to insure this residence, for a reason such as: misrepresentation, non-disclosure, an excess or severity of claims, or for non-payment of premiums. These types of cancellations and refusals may affect your rates and need to be included in your quote.

However, you should select 'No' for this question if, you cancelled the policy yourself or were cancelled or refused for a reason such as: the value of your property became too high, or your coverage needs changed or because your broker discontinued their contract with your insurance supplier. These types of cancellations should not affect your rates and can be discussed with the insurance representative when you confirm your quote.

In what year was your residence built?

Insurance companies use the age of your property to determine your rates. Generally, the older your home, the more you will pay for insurance. This is because there's a higher the risk of fire and accidents in older homes.

Need help estimating your home's replacement value?

We can help you estimate your home's replacement value. Simply enter in your home's square footage. We will multiply the square footage of your residence by $130 (an average value for most urban Canadian centres). However, when you speak to an insurance representative or broker, they will make sure your insurance policy reflects your home's true replacement value based on the tools and statistics they have available.

To get a quote based on a different replacement value, simply put 'yes' for the question: "Do you know the replacement value of your residence?", and input your replacement value.

What is a replacement value?
The replacement value of your home is the price to rebuild your house (with materials of like kind and quality) after a serious loss, like fire. It is not the amount you would get if you sold your house and, it does not include the value of the land where your house is located.

Replacement cost - contents

If you have to make a property claim, your insurance company will give you the cash value of all the items you have lost. When you replace the item with a similar kind and quality within 180 days of the day it was destroyed, the insurance company will pay you what it cost you to replace the item. This means you are getting the value of new items, not the depreciated value of what your belongings were worth.

This includes coverage for freezing pipes and the overflow of water from public water mains carrying drinking water (e.g. a bathtub overflow). You should consider adding this additional coverage if you want to eliminate your deductible, or if you have valuables that exceed $5,000. You can also use this option to itemize your larger valuables separately and use the basic policy limit to cover your smaller valued pieces.

What additional heating do you use to heat your property?
